REVIEW: I'm not usually one to use caplocked-shouty-statements in reviews. I like to think that I am more eloquent than that, but... HOLY BANANA BALLS BATMAN!!! THAT CLIFFHANGER! REALLY???? YOU'RE GONNA LEAVE ME LIKE THAT?! NOOOOOOOO!!!! ....whew. Okay, I'm done now. Back to our regularly scheduled program.
When I went into this book, I didn't know much more than the synopsis and a little extra snippet that the publisher provided (oh yeah, this book was provided to me by Sourcebooks Fire, because they are amazing human beings who know a way to a girl's bookish heart). It seemed like an interesting, slightly damaged, love story that would be fun and a bit sweet. But then there's that last little line that teases that something goes wrong and also, it's listed as a Mystery. There was something sinister going on underneath all of it and I wanted to see just what made this book sound so different. I was hooked.
So you've surmised by now that there is a cliffhanger. An epic one. When I read it I had no idea that there would be another book. I nearly had a metaphorical heart-attack. You've never seen a woman jump on Goodreads as fast as I did to see if there was a sequel! Normally I don't start a book review at the end, but when you read it, you'll understand. And thankfully, there is a sequel coming. You need to know this so that you don't keel over when you reach the end.
Onto the book proper. The narrative happens amidst an interchange of police transcripts, text and Twitter messages, as well as switching back and forth between Tessa and Eric. It's perfect. You would think that the different techniques would get confusing or muddled but no, the story maintains a fantastic flow and drive. Every time a police transcript interjection happens, it just sucks you in more and more, because you know something dark is coming and you can't wait to get to it.
There is still a fantastic love story playing out in the middle of that sinister feeling though. Tessa and Eric's individual issues and how they bond is sweet and gave so much heart to the story. And of course they have their own secrets and lies messing it all up and threatening to blow their connection apart. It really is like there are two or three different plot lines all intermixed and brilliantly woven together. It's hard to explain unless you've read it and I don't want to give any spoilers! But basically, this is no standard Contemporary Romance or Mystery but an elevated blend of the two.
In summation, THANK GOODNESS THERE IS A SEQUEL (otherwise, I would need to go kidnap the author and demand more and then I would be arrested because I don't think I'm very skilled at kidnapping and would certainly be caught and it would turn into a whole thing and I just don't have time for that), and obviously I loved this book and highly recommend it.
