REVIEW: A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

SYNOPSIS: When nineteen-year-old huntress Feyre kills a wolf in the woods, a beast-like creature arrives to demand retribution. Dragged to a treacherous magical land she knows about only from legends, Feyre discovers that her captor is not an animal, but Tamlin—one of the lethal, immortal faeries who once ruled their world.

As she dwells on his estate, her feelings for Tamlin transform from icy hostility into a fiery passion that burns through every lie and warning she's been told about the beautiful, dangerous world of the Fae. But an ancient, wicked shadow over the faerie lands is growing, and Feyre must find a way to stop it . . . or doom Tamlin—and his world—forever.

REVIEW: I'm a sheep, I tell you, a sheep! But I'm a happy sheep, so there you go. I had no interest in this book, probably because I didn't know that it existed, until I saw the multitudes reading and praising it on Instagram and social media. Therefore I caved and bought myself a copy. I didn't read the synopsis and had never read a review, so other than knowing it was a Young Adult Fantasy, I knew nothing (yeah, yeah, throw in a Jon Snow joke here) about this book at all. I just opened it and started reading. And in following the herd, I became a believer...I'm a happy bookish sheep.

Approximately 80 pages in, I think, It's Beauty and the Beast! The original, not the Disney version,...except of course there's much more to it than that and some rather interesting twists on the original fairy tale too (don't worry, there's still a library involved, although that's part of one of the interesting twists too). And the more I read, the more similarities I was able to find, including some of the popular bits that Disney added, it was like a fun and surprising treasure hunt woven into the story, but didn't distract from the overall experience. Fun.

As for the story itself, don't worry, it doesn't rest completely on it's fairy tale roots. Maas has created a fantastic world for us readers to dive into and a female lead that we all secretly want to be, even just a little bit. Of course I had no idea how to pronounce Feyre until it was helpfully sounded out to us, a sincere thanks for that! Yay for faeries, magical lands, strong characters, romance, and incredible obstacles. ACOTAR (this is an acronym for the book that is necessary to survive the fandom, just an FYI for new readers) is the perfect mix and blend of elements, equaling one amazing story.

I am officially a fan.
