REVIEW: Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare
SYNOPSIS: In a kingdom by the sea…
In a secret world where half-angel warriors are sworn to fight demons, parabatai is a sacred word.
A parabatai is your partner in battle. A parabatai is your best friend. Parabatai can be everything to each other—but they can never fall in love.
Emma Carstairs is a warrior, a Shadowhunter, and the best in her generation. She lives for battle. Shoulder to shoulder with her parabatai, Julian Blackthorn, she patrols the streets of Los Angeles, where vampires party on the Sunset Strip, and faeries—the most powerful of supernatural creatures—teeter on the edge of open war with Shadowhunters. When the bodies of humans and faeries turn up murdered in the same way Emma’s parents were when she was a child, an uneasy alliance is formed. This is Emma’s chance for revenge—and Julian’s chance to get back his brother Mark, who is being held prisoner by the faerie Courts. All Emma, Mark, and Julian have to do is solve the murders within two weeks…and before the murderer targets them.
Their search takes Emma from sea caves full of sorcery to a dark lottery where death is dispensed. And each clue she unravels uncovers more secrets. What has Julian been hiding from her all these years? Why does Shadowhunter Law forbid parabatai to fall in love? Who really killed her parents—and can she bear to know the truth?

REVIEW: Holy hormones Batman! Talk about star-crossed teen angst!
I am completely in love with this series already. It feels exactly like the shadowhunter world has had new life breathed into it. The Mortal Instruments started strong, but there were definitely a couple books in the middle where I wasn't as invested in the story, and by book 6, I found myself far more interested in the young Blackthorns and Emma Carstairs than the main storyline. And for good reason it seems!
I am so excited with the direction The Dark Artifices is taking. There were lots of new people to meet and get to know; Julian Blackthorn, you are my new book crush, I mean, tortured artist with a heart of gold, hello! It's bookish perfection. The entire Blackthorn family is so intriguing too. Add in Crisitina, the fairies, new warlock, and shady downworlders, and it's the most amazing mix of characters. And that's just the beginning.
Mysteries, new and old, to uncover and explore! Emma Carstairs is on a mission and we are just as deseperate to solve it with her. Our heroine is strong and recklass, a wonderful switch up of the norm if you ask me, but at the same time she is lost and just figuring out her life. Add in new and changing relationships and Emma is a little bit confused. But I loved every minute of it!
Secrets and Lies! Oh, the secrets and lies, it's all so dramatic. Awesome right? And may I reiterate, the hormones and tension levels are off the charts. Fantastic reading.
I could say more, but I don't want to give any spoilers.
The only complaint is that we have to wait another year for more. There wasn't a big cliffhanger, it was a pretty fantastic ending, but there was definitely huge set ups for the next novel.
I. Can. Hardly. Wait.
