Review: I had enjoyed a few Shayla Black books previously but the last few I tried I had been disappointed with and I had never read anything by Lexi Blake before...but Scandal Never Sleeps had been recommended to me by numerous internet authorities so I downloaded the free sample and was immediately intrigued. Plus, at the $1.99 Kindle price, I couldn't really turn it down. I am happy to say that I was pleasantly surprised and entertained!
I love reading random romance novels, I find them necessary to my sanity. I can't be constantly reading the next great thought-provoking epic novel, my brain would explode. I need to mix things up, change genres and styles, and sometimes I just need something fun and easy. That's where romance and chick-lit come in. Has the entire romance genre become cliched and predictable...probably, but do I care? ... NO. I still require smart writing and purposeful plot lines, but otherwise, let me escape into something fun or sexy or angsty; or better yet, all three!
Secrets and lies. All the best romances have secrets and lies. Our main characters are victims of circumstance and then things get understandably tense. We are introduced to a full cast of characters, alongside Gabe and Everly, that will be carrying on the series of romances to come. Obviously, they will each get their own book, so as you read this one, you're squirreling away the information and given a glimpse of the future.
There are several mysteries to solve in Scandal Never Sleeps. The departed Maddox, which has brought our couple together, has left a mess behind him following his demise. Gabe and Everly must uncover secrets and clues to save themselves from scandal as well as darker unseen forces. I personally love a story where there is more going on than just a couple falling in love. This story arc is fantastic and balanced well with the romance.
It should be noted, that while Gabe and Everly's individual story is wrapped up in this book, that the overall mystery and intrigue is not. This is bigger than just one book. The secrets and threads that Maddox left behind are laid out to continue into the next book in the series. The authors planned this out very well and I thought that it was done smartly.
I'm excited to find more answers and get into the next romance that is waiting unfold!
